Historical Development of Tu Hieu Pagoda
In 1848 – The Beginning
In its earliest days, Tu Hieu Pagoda began as a small hermitage known as An Duong Thao Am, founded in 1848 by Zen Master Nhat Dinh. At that time, he served as a high-ranking monk at Giac Hoang Pagoda within the imperial court of the Nguyen Dynasty. Due to his old age, he retired to the forest to lead a quiet life of meditation while caring for his elderly mother.
According to local legend, during a period when his mother fell seriously ill and required nourishment from meat and fish, the monk did not hesitate to walk nearly 5 kilometers through the forest every day to buy fish and prepare porridge for her.
