Gia Long Tomb Entrance Fee & Opening Hours
The Royal Tomb of Gia Long is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The entrance fee is around 150,000 VND per person (approximately 6 USD), while children under 12 years old can enter free of charge.
The best time to visit is from March to April, when the weather in Hue is mild and pleasant, making outdoor exploration more comfortable. In general, the period from late autumn to early spring (January to April) is considered the ideal season for visiting Hue’s historical sites.
About the Gia Long Emperor
Gia Long, whose birth name was Nguyen Phuc Anh in 1762, lived during a turbulent period in Vietnamese history. He spent much of his early life in conflict, especially during the Tay Son Rebellion, which shaped his determination and leadership. After nearly 25 years of struggle, he successfully unified the country and became emperor in 1802.
He chose Hue as the capital and established a centralized imperial system that influenced Vietnam for more than a century. Under his rule, important constructions such as the Imperial City of Hue were built, turning the city into a political and cultural center. His reign marked a period of stability, and he is remembered as a decisive and practical ruler who laid the foundation for modern Vietnam.
Gia Long Tomb History
The tomb began construction in 1814 and was completed in 1820. On May 11, 1814, Gia Long Emperor ordered the construction of Tho Lang at Tho Son Mountain in Dinh Mon village to bury his principal wife, Empress Thua Thien Cao (Tong Thi Lan), who had passed away nearly three months earlier.
Before that, the emperor had visited this area twice. The first time was in 1808, when he oversaw the restoration of the tombs of the Nguyen Lords and their consorts. The second visit was in 1811, when he searched for a burial site for his mother, Empress Hieu Khang, with the help of the geomancer Le Duy Thanh, personally choosing the burial location and supervising the construction.
According to the Dai Nam Thuc Luc, when Empress Thua Thien Cao passed away, Gia Long discussed with his mandarins the idea of building a shared tomb for both himself and the empress. He personally went to the site to choose the exact location for the burial chambers for the empress and for himself in the future.
During the six years of construction, Gia Long Emperor directly surveyed the land, approved the layout, guided the design, and closely supervised the building progress. He passed away in February 1820.
Gia Long Tomb Location & How to get there
Gia Long Tomb is located in Huong Ho Commune, on the outskirts of Hue City. The site lies in a quiet and remote area, embraced by Thien Tho Mountain, which was carefully chosen for its ideal feng shui setting. The surrounding landscape of rolling hills, pine forests, and fresh air creates a perfect resting place for an emperor, reflecting the traditional belief in harmony between humans and nature.
Reaching the tomb can be an experience in itself. One of the most memorable ways is to take a dragon boat along the Perfume River, enjoying scenic views along the journey, which usually takes around two hours. Alternatively, visitors can travel by car, motorbike, taxi, or even bicycle. For those unfamiliar with the route, hiring a local driver is a convenient and stress-free option, as the tomb is quite far from the city center.
The Royal Tomb of Gia Long Architecture
The overall layout of Gia Long Tomb reflects a perfect balance between natural landscape and human design. The complex is set on a wide, flat hill, with Dai Thien Tho Mountain in front and seven mountains forming a protective backdrop behind.
On both sides, fourteen smaller mountains create a symmetrical formation known as “Ta Thanh Long” (left) and “Huu Bach Ho” (right), following traditional Feng Shui principles.
The Burial Area
At the center of the complex lies the burial site of Gia Long and Empress Thua Thien Cao. Visitors walk through a spacious courtyard lined with stone statues of horses, elephants, civil and military servants, and ascend seven ceremonial terraces to reach Buu Thanh, located on the hilltop.
Inside are two stone tombs placed side by side, representing the concept of “Can Khon harmony,” a symbol of balance, loyalty, and everlasting love.
The Worshiping and Stele Area
To the right of the burial area stands Minh Thanh Palace, the main worship space dedicated to the emperor and empress. The palace once preserved many personal items from Gia Long’s life, such as his royal attire and equipment used during his years of warfare. The name “Minh Thanh” can be understood as “brilliant completion,” reflecting both spiritual meaning and historical context.
On the left side is the stele pavilion, which houses a large stone tablet engraved with the inscription “Thanh Duc Than Cong.” This text was composed by Minh Mang to honor his father’s achievements, and it remains an important historical record carved with great detail.
Surrounding Landscape
Beyond the main areas, quiet pathways lead visitors through green grass, wildflowers, and pine forests to nearby tombs. Among them, the Thien Tho Huu Tomb of Empress Thuan Thien stands out for its peaceful and secluded setting. Nearby, Gia Thanh Palace was built to worship her, following a similar architectural style to Minh Thanh Palace.
