History of Tinh Tam Lake

In the early years of the Gia Long reign, the lake was originally an old river that was dammed, then expanded and reshaped into a square form. Inside the lake were two small islets used to build storage facilities for gunpowder and saltpeter, and it was then called Ky Te Lake.

In the spring of the 19th year of Emperor Minh Mang’s reign (1838), the king ordered Nguyen Tang Minh, Commander of the Right Army, and Dao Tri Phu, Deputy Minister of Finance, to lead more than 8,000 soldiers in the Imperial City to renovate the lake.

It was transformed into a place for royal leisure and renamed “Tinh Tam” Lake, which means “Purifying the Mind.” The name reflects the peaceful and meditative purpose of the garden. From that time on, Tinh Tam Lake became one of the most beautiful royal gardens of the Hue Imperial City.

Tinh Tam Lake Architecture

Tinh Tam Lake has a rectangular layout with a perimeter of nearly 1,500 meters. Within the lake are three islands: Bong Lai, Phuong Truong, and Doanh Chau, which serve as the central highlights of the architectural complex.

The hall faces south and is surrounded by a brick balustrade. In front stands Bong Doanh Gate, followed by Bong Doanh Bridge, which connects the island to the southern bank of the lake. To the east of the hall is the Thanh Tam waterside pavilion, facing east, while to the west stands the Trung Luyen Pavilion, facing west. To the north is Hong Cu Gate, along with a bridge of the same name.

On Phuong Truong Island, at its center stands Nam Huan Pavilion, a two-story structure facing south and roofed with yellow glazed tiles. To the south is Bich Tao Gate and Bich Tao Bridge. On the northern side of the island is Tinh Tam Pavilion, facing north.

To the east is Hao Nhien House (renamed Thien Nhien in 1848), facing east, and to the west is Duong Tinh Veranda, facing west. Between the two islands lies Tu Dat Pavilion, positioned within a system of 44 roofed corridors that connect to Bich Tao Bridge in the south and Hong Cu Bridge in the north.

Running across the center of Tinh Tam Lake is Kim Oanh Dyke, which stretches from the eastern bank to the western bank. On the eastern side of the dyke is Luc Lieu Bridge, a three-compartment structure with a tiled roof.

To the south, the dyke connects to a long corridor of 56 sections, with Bach Tan Bridge at its center. South of this bridge is Thanh Tuoc Pavilion, where the royal boat was moored. At the western end of the corridor stands Khuc Ta Pavilion, which connects via a small overwater passage to another pavilion called Khuc Ta Ha Phong. To the south of this pavilion lies Doanh Chau Island.

On the corners of Bong Lai and Phuong Truong Islands, artificial rock formations were arranged to resemble miniature mountains. Meanwhile, Doanh Chau Island was designed as a large ornamental rock garden rising from the lake surface. Surrounding the islands, along Kim Oanh Dyke, and around the lake’s edge, various willow trees, bamboo, and rare flowers were planted. Within the lake itself, only white lotus flowers were cultivated.

Tinh Tam Lake is enclosed by a relatively high brick wall, separating it from the outside. Four gates open on each side: Ha Huan to the south, Dong Hy to the north, Xuan Quang to the east, and Thu Nguyet to the west.

With its elaborate yet refined design, harmoniously blending with nature, Tinh Tam Lake is considered a remarkable achievement of Vietnamese landscape architecture in the 19th century. Its beauty inspired many poems by Nguyen Dynasty emperors such as Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, and Tu Duc. Among them, the most notable is “Tinh Ho Ha Hung,” part of a collection praising the 20 most beautiful landscapes of the imperial capital by Emperor Thieu Tri.

At that time, both the poem and the scenery of Tinh Tam Lake were depicted in mirror paintings and displayed in royal palaces.

However, from the late 19th century onward, due to a lack of maintenance, many structures around the lake gradually deteriorated or were dismantled. In 1946, the surrounding brick wall was demolished and replaced with a lower one. In 1960, a small octagonal pavilion was built on the former site of Bong Doanh Hall as a memorial. During this restoration period, a concrete bridge was also constructed to connect Bong Lai Island with Kim Oanh Dyke.
